Helping Hands for Little Feet

When IDEASTEP had a collection of braces and pre-molded insoles that they no longer needed, they called Easterseals. Christine Paris, PT, MS, PCS, an outpatient therapy and clinical services manager, was glad to receive the call. “We were delighted that SOLO offered these items to us and knew how much they would benefit our clients.”

Easterseals offers speciality medical clinics in pediatric orthotics, orthopedics and neurology in Berks County for children with complex medical needs. “We will use the braces for individuals who do not have insurance coverage,” added Christine. Easterseals services are underwritten by the United Way of Berks County and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, services are provided at no cost to families. Having braces donated means Easterseals can provide more services to more families.
Currently, Medicaid does not provide reimbursement for pre-molded orthotics yet the need is there. “The devices provide support during walking and help maintain proper foot alignment to improve the efficient of the gait,” said Christine. Easterseals Early Intervention Program has already used some of the smallest pre-molded orthotics for patients as young as age 3.
“We will also use the braces to see how an AFO might affect their gait before ordering a custom brace,” noted Christine. In the custom brace industry, this is a rare opportunity and SOLO is happy to make it possible.
