My name is Stephen Perry and I am a Professor in the area of Neuromechanics of Human Movement.

You may ask yourself: What is meant by mobility?

The dictionary defines mobility as …”the ability to move or be moved freely and easily”

The main benefits of mobility include the ability to get from place to place, a sense of independence, heart health, mental health, strength and flexibility and improved balance and stability.

Whether young or older or somewhere in between, mobility is important in our daily activities and to our overall Health and Wellness.

Getting out and walking for just short periods of time (10-20 minutes) twice a day will help your physical and mental health.  In this day and age of electronics and deadlines it is even more important than ever.  Spiraling into a viscous cycle of inactivity will lead to poor sleep and eating habits (like snacking on caffeine and sugar), anxiety and eventually bad health.  Therefore in order to obtain a good quality of life these short bouts of activity will actually suppress appetite and provide relaxation.  Studies have also shown that walking in nature can have an added benefit as compared to going to a gym or walking on a treadmill.  So go outside and improve your quality of life, one step at a time.

Throughout this series of blogs, I hope expand on all the aspects of mobility and your understanding of how physical activity, muscles, joints and our senses all work together to keep us moving and maintain our health and prevent injury.
